Tis the Season

Scrooge! Grumpy! Killjoy!

Words like that get ascribed to you when you aren’t willing to celebrate what everyone is celebrating. They won’t ask what’s wrong. They don’t have time for that. They only have time to leave  you with words that keep you stuck deeper in the hole.

They must sing and dance and exclaim the mantras of the season. This is important. Everyone knows it. Everyone gets it.

You don’t. You don’t understand why the seemly false sense of joy because of half-truths. You don’t get why people who are normally rude are now jolly. You don’t get why you are put down because you can’t seem to run as fast as the rest.

I’m sure there is joy somewhere in there… Can you help me find it? It isn’t acceptable to voice the hurt and concerns so you can be just as happy as the rest. So someone can give you uplifting words and life changing actions.

They don’t have time for that. They only have time to leave words that keep you stuck deeper in the hole.

You aren’t mad at them. You aren’t angry with their songs, and dancing and witty sayings. You aren’t disgusted with their joy.

You are disgusted at…. Yourself.

For believing the lie. For believing the half-true stories. For allowing your words to speak louder than your actions. For letting the focus be your songs and not the song becoming your motivation to act.

They say you are too serious. They said you are intense. You need to just chill out.

Have you gone too far? Can you care too-much? What is the measuring tool used to gauge personal intensity? Should it be the person who gives their life in a foreign land for the cause they believe? Or the person who right after saying how thankful they are runs to the nearest mall to wait in line for the latest item.

Regardless of what they say and what you see YOU have to decide where your joy comes from.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
